5 benefits of learning to sew

Let us tell you about sewing! Whether you're a pro or just starting out, sewing can be a great way to express creativity, improve skills, and connect with others. Plus, it's a sustainable and ethical way to make your own clothes and sew with textiles. So, let's dive into why we think sewing is such a great hobby along with their 5 most beneficial skills!

Creativity and personal expression

Sewing is an outlet to showcase individual style and creativity throughout the whole process: from fabric selection, pattern choice and design. Providing unique, and personalised items to reflect the sewist.

Developing skills and independence

Sewing is an outlet to develop many skills, other than the obvious ones! Not only can sewing improve your attention to detail, it also allows for self-sufficiency and independence. Learning how to sew can lead to many possibilities for repairs and up-cycling of existing clothes. Hand-eye coordination, dexterity and precision are all skills sewing requires - the more you sew, the better your fine-motor skills become! Due to the creative freedom of sewing it is natural to gain independence, whether that is with sewing itself or from creative expression.

Environmentally conscious

Once you have learnt to sew, not only can you up-cycle, repair and repurpose textiles material and garments, you are also making a significant positive impact on your carbon footprint. In addition to being able to select sustainable fabrics, you also have control over the production and post production of each sewn item. Choosing to make your own garments and sew, you are making the conscious decision to support fair human rights and animal welfare.

Social Connection

Sewing is such a great way to meet and form connections with people who have similar interests. Although, I have to say, it's nice sometimes to sew by yourself - it's always great to meet people who share the same interests, allowing you to make friends and expand your skills. At Thread Room, we would like to say that our classes are a great place for people to not only learn how to sew but meet like minded people and connect over the passion we all share!

Problem solving

Finally, the final reason we think sewing is beneficial is because it encourages problem solving. It requires a certain level of analytical thinking especially when troubleshooting issues that arise. It motivates creative solutions by figuring out ways to make your sewing project work and encourages you to think outside the box. At times, sewing can be a challenging hobby - it often requires persistence and solving problems to do so.

These are just 5 ways that we think why sewing is such a great skill to learn for everyone at all ages! Sewing is such a fun and rewarding hobby that can benefit us in lots of ways! If you're convinced, we would love to see you at our classes and workshops. We have classes for every age and ability! Check out our website for more information.
